The LEGO Battles Merge

Posted by jamesster , 22 July 2013 · 368 views

A fun email landed in my inbox today.

Hi Jamie,

Sorry for the slow reply but we are very busy right now. Thanks for the kind words about our LEGO games. I am glad you like them. I will do my best to answer your question.

You are correct. Originally LEGO Battles was developed as three separate games: LEGO Space, LEGO Castle and LEGO Pirates. These titles were to be sold as individual DS games but allow you to connect any of the games together in multiplayer. You could trade units with your friends from the other two carts and win units by competing in multiplayer games against the other carts. Ultimately WB determined they wanted one bigger game instead of the separate games so we merged them into LEGO Battles. We lost a little bit merging into the single game as we used to have some microgames that allowed you to win a chance a units at the end of each game but ultimately I think LEGO Battles is a much bigger and stronger game.

We are currently working on LEGO Friends but unfortunately I cannot discuss any unannounced projects we may be working on. I agree that LEGO and RTS are a nice fit and I am glad to see we have a strong fan base out there!

Thanks

Well, that's one mystery solved. Yay! Now, to see if we can find out what happened to the canceled 2009 LEGO Racers game...

If you find anything out about Racers 3 (or whatever it might have been called), I would love to know. I think I said this before on here, but I've wanted a Racers 3 since I was little.

Anyway, thanks for sharing the email, that was very interesting.

Oh yes, let's do find out about this canceled LEGO Racers game, and why TT (in all speculation here) thought it would be bad for their image by breaking out of their mold.

There was a planned Lego Racers 3 in 2009?!?!?  Why am i only hearing about this now?!

It wasn't LEGO Racers 3, it was simply called "LEGO Racers: The Videogame" and was likely going to involve these sorts of sets. It was advertised on 2009 set boxes (like the LEGO Space and LEGO Castle games that became LEGO Battles) but we never heard of it again.

Ah, I see. Thanks.

It looks like they probably were not going to use the old characters then such as Rocket Racer or Johnny Thunder. Its a shame that they aren't acknowledged much.

Edit: Johnny Thunder was in LU so they haven't completely forgotten him i guess!

You're thinking more of like LEGO Racers 1 and 2. Considering the sets with the label, I'd expect it to be more along the lines of Drome Racers.

I remember looking at the LEGO Racers sets that I had, and thinking, "Wow, they should make a Racers 3 that used these sets."

Ahh.. Another canceled modern LEGO game mystery, reminds me of that unsolved (or possibly now solved) mystery of that LEGO Space game that was advertised on the Space Police 3 boxes, of course, I can only assume that it must have been one of the games that formed into LEGO Battles.

That's exactly what we're talking about... Same with the Castle game that was advertised on set boxes. LEGO had already told us they had been merged to become LEGO Battles, but we didn't know anything besides that (the trading, minigames, Pirates game, etc).
